Kalakaua Middle School Ainoa, Inc. in partnership with UH Gear Up, Farrington High School and Kapolei High School, were able to develop and deliver a successful pilot in the summer of 2007 at Kalakaua Middle School. During the six week summer program, 22 students from the middle school were taught Algebra I in the school's computer lab. Instructors and undergraduates from the University of Hawaii, provided instruction and tutoring through out the program. All 22 students successfully completed the course, under the time allowed and entered Farrington High School in July 2007 with a standing math credit. UH Manoa GEAR UP continues to track those students throughout their high school careers. Below are pictures of the students at Kalakaua Middle hard at work in the 2007 Summer Algebra Institute. Farrington High School The partnership between Ainoa, Inc., UH Manoa GEAR UP and Farrington High School is resulting in an exciting integration of online education in the traditional classroom. Some 120 students have turned in their math textbooks for a computer. During their designated math period, they now head to the computer lab to earn their math credits through an online course. Farrington's students are so engaged by their math course that they often need to be reminded to log off before the bell rings. Farrington's program is set to expand in school year 2008 to 2009 with more than 10 course sections. Kapolei High School Among the first schools to partner with Ainoa Inc., Kapolei High School is making strides in the Leeward District with an after school credit recovery program this year, and plans to create an online learning academy for the 2008 to 2009 school year. Pearl City High School Pearl City High is taking full advantage of Ainoa's 24/7 course availability. Students are required to meet with teachers several times a week, but they are also expected to work on their courses for at least two hours everyday, while off campus.
