Our Mission

FREEDOM TO BE EMPOWERED: The meaning of our company name and its significance.

The name Ainoa was inspired for its namesake and its significant meaning in the Hawaiian language. Gladys Kamakakuokalani Ainoa Brandt, a pioneer in education and native Hawaiian rights was the first Hawaiian principal at Kamehameha Schools, dedicated to educating children of Hawaiian ancestries. She was a pioneer in education and fought for native Hawaiian rights.

In the ancient times when Kings and Queens ruled the Hawaiian Islands, it was sacrilegious for men and women to eat together in the hopes of keeping the male power pure and clean. This kapu or taboo was called ‘aikapu. The kapu systems implemented regulations that created a harmonious and balanced environment. However, the period of makahiki or harvest season was a time when the ‘aikapu was lifted. Men and women could eat together freely and exchange mana (power) without consequence. This celebration was called AINOA.

Captain Cook's arrival opened the door for European influence in the Hawaiian Islands. A new age was dawning as Hawaiian Ali’i and their people were being exposed to the outside world, which in turn challenged the ancient traditions and spun the once harmonious environment off its axis. Kamehameha united the islands, becoming the first chief to do so, thus allowing his predecessor the opportunity to lead the Hawaiian people into the next generation. Kamehameha II faced an ominous task of perpetuating his people in the larger world. With great thought and advice from his father's favorite wife Ka'ahumanu, he sat down with his mother Keopulani the most sacred chiefess and symbolically abolished the ‘aikapu by partaking food with her.

Ainoa, Inc. for us meant to break from the past and change the ways we teach our children. As Kamehameha II hoped to perpetuate this “freedom” with his people into the next generations, we hope to do so for our students. We understand that we dwell in an ever changing world; therefore our hope is to incorporate the traditions of the past while striving for innovative and progressive ways of learning and teaching. We will make way for Ainoa - the freedom to be empowered without boundaries. Ainoa, Inc.'s logo embodies the winds of change that we bring to the world of academia. We believe in the delivery of learning via the Internet but the support of students must be in place.
