A GREEN 1:1 COMPUTING PROGRAM

Computers 4 Kids (C4K) is a not-for-profit Hawaii corporation dedicated to placing a computer in the hands of every ninth grade student in Hawaii. C4K is partnering with Ainoa Incorporated, (AI) a provider and content developer of online educational programs for Hawaii’s secondary school students.

AI will provide structured, accredited online instruction for students in the C4K program. Their online courses are aligned to state and national standards and are delivered via a secured site. Students will have access to the courses 24 hours a day and seven days a week, they will have access to a credentialed instructor with each course until midnight via email, chat or phone.

The Office of Student Equity, Excellence and Diversity (SEED) currently plays a major role in Kalihi area schools by addressing the under-representation of disadvantaged students in higher education. Through its subsidiary program, UH GEAR UP, the online programs at Farrington High School were launched. Several key components were noted to be critical to the success of their programs; teacher training and the support staff of University of Hawaii students became mentors and tutors for students in various after-school programs. The results have prompted SEED to explore an expansion to other schools statewide. Their involvement ensures that beyond the benefits of this program; is the realization of the end goal, and that is to clear a path-way for students to enter college.

The program will offer the bundled package to ninth grade students for a nominal fee. The balance of any cost will come from the C4K promotional campaign.
